In my CFY year, I worked in a classroom with individuals that were minimally verbal to nonverbal. At the time, at least 8 out of 12 of my students had some communication device. I took most of these AAC devices out of the box for the first time and figured out how to use them.
I have always been a bit of a technology nerd and have always been interested in AAC, but I really didn’t know where to start.
So first thing I did: I took the devices out of the box.
Because sometimes you need to open the box.
Then I started searching.
I searched the internet for how to help support my students. This lead me to take extra training and attended workshops on various AAC interventions.
I spent a great deal of time learning how to help my students while their AAC systems gathered dust because I had taken them out of their dust-free box.
So why a post on something so simple as taking a device out of the box? Because sometimes, that can be the hardest thing.
I will share what I have learned to help you successfully help your child, student, or client on how to communicate with the world effectively.
