My CFY year, I worked in a classroom with individuals that were minimally verbal to non verbal. At the time at least 8 out of 12 of my students had some sort of communication device. Most of which I took out of the box for the first time, and had to figure out how to use.
Now, I have always been a bit of a technology nerd, and have always been interested in AAC, but I really didn’t know where to start.
So first thing I did: I took the devices out of the box.
Because sometimes you just need to open the box.
Then I started searching.
I searched the internet for how to help support my students. I took extra trainings and attended work shops on various AAC interventions.
I spent a great deal of time learning how to help my students, while their AAC systems gathered dust, because I had taken them out of their dust free box.
So why a post on something so simple as taking a device out of the box? Because sometimes that can be the hardest thing.
I will share what I have learned to help you successfully help your child, student, or client on how to effectively communicate with the world.
Now…Turn it on!!!
